Dear Michigan voters,
As the Socialist Party/Green Party candidate for Wayne State Board of Governors, I believe I offer something that no other candidate does. Like many Michigan workers, I recently needed to return to college for additional training, so I have a strong understanding of the needs of today's worker and student. The Board of Governors has a history of ignoring the voice of Wayne State students. If elected, I will act as the student voice the Board of Governors badly needs.
In our struggling economy, when more workers than ever are returning to school, there is a greater need for affordable higher education. Sadly, the Board of Governors recently passed a 4% tuition hike and a parking fee increase, despite popular opposition. If elected, I will work to reverse this decision. I will fight to keep tuition as low as possible, so that Wayne State can best provide the educational needs of Michigan, which will be key to our economic recovery. As a Socialist, I believe that higher education should be free, but I also realize that this change would be beyond what is possible as a member of the Board of Governors. However, I will use the position to bring attention to our state and our nation's misplaced budget priorities which consistently underfund our educational institutions. I will work to pressure lawmakers to return our priorities to where they need to be: Education.
I believe that Wayne State can and should act as an example of better type of workplace. Currently, most Americans submit to a workplace that can only be described as a tyranny. Unions are an important part of transforming the workplace into a democracy, by giving workers representation in workplace decision-making. If elected, I will provide direct and consistent support for WSU's existing unions as well as efforts by non-union employees working to organize on campus, with the eventual goal of 100 percent unionization of all university employees, regardless of full-time status or position.
SOCIALIST PARTY strives
to establish a radical democracy that places peoples’ lives
under their own control - a non racist, classless, feminist,
non-heterosexist socialist society where working people own and
control the means of production and distribution, through
democratically-controlled committees and assemblies; where full
employment is realized for everyone who wants to work; where workers
have the right to form unions freely, and to strike and engage in
other forms of job actions; and where the production of society is
used for the benefit of all humanity, not for the private profit of a
few. We believe socialism and democracy are one and indivisible.
working class is in a key and central position to fight back against
the ruling capitalist class and its power.
working class is the major force worldwide that can lead the way to a
socialist future – to a real radical democracy from below.
The Socialist Party fights for progressive changes compatible with a socialist future. We advocate militant working class struggles and electoral action, independent of the capitalist-controlled two-party system, to present socialist alternatives. We strive for democratic social revolutions — radical and fundamental changes in the structure and nature of economic, political and social relations — to abolish the power now exercised by the few who control the economy and the government. The Socialist Party is a democratic, multi-tendency organization, with structure and practices visible and accessible to all members. - Join Today!
